When can chamber pressure overcome a rock seal?
Fit the components before testing.
Magma pressure must exceed the weight of overlying rock plus an illustrative tensile resistance before the sealed vent opens. Positive excess pressure supplies an idealized exit speed.
Ideal pressure/energy teaching model, rock density 2,700 and magma density 2,500 kg/m³. No viscosity, gas exsolution, conduit losses or eruption forecasting. Rock resistance is illustrative.
Open the vent with positive excess pressure at no more than 15 MPa chamber pressure.
Open the vent by overcoming rock pressure and seal strength.
