How does a moving belt build up a high voltage?
Fit the belt, combs and dome before turning
Combs transfer charge onto the belt and into the hollow conducting dome. Its small capacitance means little charge can produce a high voltage; leakage competes with transport.
30 pF dome; illustrative charge transport 0.003 μA/rpm and leakage resistance 100 GΩ/(1+humidity/20). Air breakdown 3 kV/mm is an approximate uniform-field value. Voltage shown is the pre-spark charging peak, not a sustained spark voltage.
Reach a discharge across a 20 mm gap with a moving belt.
Build enough voltage to discharge across the gap.
