Why does charging take longer than a flash?
Assemble, charge, then trigger the flash
A large charging resistor limits incoming current. The trigger switches the stored electric-field energy into a much smaller resistance, releasing it quickly.
A low-voltage teaching flash: ideal 1 mF capacitor, variable charging resistance, 10 Ω discharge path. Controls select analytical elapsed time; real xenon ignition and conversion losses are omitted.
Store at least 1 joule and release it into the flash.
Store energy, then discharge it through the flash tube.
